Introduction
The 2nd Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Clinic includes a hospitalization ward of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, a day hospital, a clinic for specialist visits, and a medication room.
It has 10 rooms with 3 beds each for a total of 30 beds. It also has an isolation room. Each room has a bathroom. The presence of a physician in the ward is guaranteed from Monday to Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m, and from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. on Saturdays. General rounds are performed twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). For every shift 2 nurses are present. The head nurse is present from 8.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
Nine operating sessions are performed weekly, together with one session of Day Surgery and one operating session at the Private Clinic Villa Chiara of Bologna.
The clinical activity comprises the general field of orthopedics and traumatology, with particular focus on
- sports diseases (articular capsulo-ligament lesions, tendon and cartilaginous lesions, with transplantations of autologous chondrocytes for the repair of cartilaginous and bone defects)
- prosthetic diseases of the lower limb (hip, knee)
- reconstructive osteo-articular diseases.
Clinical activity
The 2nd Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Clinic works on the following clinical issues:
- prosthetic pathologies of the lower limb (hip prosthesis, knee and ankle-joint prosthesis) and the upper limb (shoulder prosthesis). Particular interest is dedicated to mini-invasiveness of prosthetic implants, to implants with a low usage of bone tissue, like resurfacing prostheses, and to innovative materials like ceramic coupling, titanium alloys and bioactive coverings, like, for instance, hydroxylapatite;
- knee pathologies, in particular: lesions of menisci, of knee cruciate ligaments, ankle capsulo-ligament lesions, lesions of tendons and articular cartilage. In addition, we treat osteochondral lesions with regenerative medicine techniques addressing the cartilaginous tissue through the use of stem cells;
- shoulder pathologies. We treat pathologies such as: lesions of the rotator cuff, impingement syndromes of the subacromial space, calcific tendinopathies and chronical instabilities like recurrent shoulder dislocation;
- ankle and foot pathologies. We treat toe deformities such as hallux valgus, claw toes and hammer toes, deformities of the rear foot such as flat foot and claw foot, and outcomes of congenital deformities like the club foot;
- outcomes of traumas. Because of their seriousness, sometimes severe fractures do not heal and cause pseudo-arthrosis or delayed consolidation; or, they heal with an axis deviation or a shortening, and may necessitate further corrective interventions to improve the functional result.
Research activity
The clinical research activity focuses mainly on the followings fields:
- evaluation and development of new techniques of ligaments reconstruction;
- study of knee rotatory instabilities, through computer-assisted surgery and innovative techniques;
- evaluation and development of interventions for the reparation of cartilaginous lesions;
- study of prosthetic implants through dynamic RSA technique (Roentgen stereophotogrammetry);
- study and development of innovative prosthetic implants;
- prosthetic infections;
- innovative shoulder surgery;
- innovative foot and ankle surgery.
