Tribology is the science that studies the behavior of two surfaces interacting with each other with relative motion. This term derives from the Greek word "tribos" and means "science of rubbing". In particular, Tribology is basically the science and technology of surface interactions between organs in relative motion. It brings together study topics from different disciplines, such as friction phenomena, lubrication theory and technique, study and use of lubricants, microscopic and macroscopic theories of wear, studies and use of wear-resistant materials.

In particular, friction comes into play in the production processes and influences forces, powers, at stake, consumption and quality of the pieces. Wear changes the surfaces and geometries of the molds and tools, determining the consistency and quality of the geometries produced. Finally, lubrication in production processes is fundamental both in the machining operations and in the operation of the machines.
