Introduction
The Unit of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology has: 8 rooms for conventional radiology (3 in the new location of the unit, where radiological exams for inpatients and the procedures of interventional radiology are performed; 2 in the emergency ward; 3 in the outpatient clinic), 3 rooms for diagnostic ultrasound imaging, 2 rooms with Computerized Tomography instrument, 2 high-field Magnetic Resonance devices and 1 room for bone densitometry (DXA).
Clinical practice
The work of the Unit of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology mainly involves the study of the musculoskeletal system; radiological studies of other organs/systems for therapeutic/surgical planning and the follow-up of some diseases of the musculoskeletal system are also performed.
The unit offers a service of advanced musculoskeletal interventional radiology for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological and non-oncological pathologies (procedures performed through guidance with imaging systems such as CT, ECHO and MRI).
The main interventional procedures performed are:
- needle biopsy (echo and CT-guided)
- thermoablation
- percutaneous vertebroplasty
- intraforaminal treatment for herniated discs and foraminal stenosis
- treatment of facet syndrome
- intra-osseous infusion
In addition, we perform under ultrasound guidance:
- fragmentation of peritendinous or periligamentous calcifications
- percutaneous ultrasound-guided treatment of calcifications
- infiltrations (articular, bursal, intratendinous, peritendinous, intramuscular)
- bursal debridement
- ultrasound-guided needle aspiration for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
- drainage of hematomas.
The latest pride of the Unit of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology is the possibility to use cryoablation for the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors.
The mission of the unit is supporting orthopedists in the management of patients, defining the nature of the pathology through diagnostic and interventional investigations.
The unit has a bed for the hospitalization of patients who are selected for interventional radiology procedures.
The Unit of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging is attended every year by Physicians enrolled in the Radio-diagnostic Specialization School of the University of Bologna and by students of the Degree Course in Techniques of Medical Radiology for Images and Radiotherapy of the University of Bologna.
Research activity
The Unit of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology actively participates in numerous clinical research projects with all the main departments and research laboratories of the Institute.
